Framing Ideas

Something that I have been doing more of is framing white boards within office spaces. I feel that it captures the white board space as a creative area where some of the best ideas come together. A lot of the time the ideas are brought to this space by a collaboration of ideas. I consider this to be one of the greatest artforms. The collaborative brainstorm is something that creates some of the greatest things that end up changing lives which then changes the world.

These ideas deserve to be framed just like the greatest works of art in a gallery or museum are framed and protected.

Here is a time-lapse film showing me designing one of these frames. Unlike the others, this one had no preparation and no preliminary pencil lines were placed down. This was a spontaneous design. Just like the spontaneous ideas that fill the white boards daily.

Monthly T-Shirts

For a while now, I’ve been constrained in controlling the quantity of t-shirts offered and in the relationship I had with the people that printed my t-shirts and the people that purchased my t-shirts.

No more! I hooked up with a great company that offers me all the flexibility I could want – which means I can offer more designs, more often, with complete flexibility.

With that in mind, I’ve decided to start producing a new limited-edition series of t-shirts every month. They will be limited run, mostly centered around that month’s theme. Once the month is over, that design may never be offered on a t-shirt again!

Get this month’s t-shirts now before time passes!!

Two of My Most Recent Pieces of Artwork Sold

This particular piece is an extremely important one to me and the life of my artwork. After this happened everything changed for the better. My artwork started to be a little bit more fluid and organic. I also started to pay attention to details such as lace, fashion and fabric textures. This sold to somebody close to me. Extremely happy somebody I know nows owns this one.

This painting sold to one of my heros & partners in crime. Feels good knowing it’s in proper hands.

Skout’s Shout Out

Working with Skout Media during one of my latest shows at Cafe Estelle was an awesome experience. They gave me full reign to do what ever what I wanted with the show and gave me the opportunity to create a large window installation to separate the restaurant from the stark hotel lobby. They also had this extremely nice thing to say about me:

“When we approached Sean about participating in our monthly art exhibition, we knew he would deliver fabulous, dynamic artwork to hang, being familiar with his prolific work from around Indy Hall. What exceeded our expectations were his eagerness to do something unique for the show, creating an entire series of drawings in a new, experimental style. He also created one of his window paintings for the space, and poured tons of energy into making something impressive, meticulous, and beautiful. He also created promotional materials for the show that were works of art in themselves! Sean is always creating and devising ways to add more art into the world around him. As well as aesthetics, he is extremely dedicated to craftsmanship. Nothing lazy, nothing sloppy. He takes immense pride in his work and is honored to be able to share it with others. The honor was ours.”

The Process of Designing a Whiteboard/ Chalkboard Frame

I was given this idea by one of the members of the software company, DMG CTRL. Instead of his projection screen just floating on a wall, he wanted to paint a frame around it so it had it’s own space when it was turned on. It’s own space and looking good at the same time. I thought this was a great idea and could be put to many different situations including the white boards that line the walls of offices and creative spaces. This white board frame could create the feeling that ideas and brainstorms put down on a white board would become works of art themselves.

So to start, I sketched out some quick ideas of what one could look like. In this case an ornate floral design. Since frames are usually symmetrical, I only sketched out one half of the frame.

I then took the idea and photoshopped it onto the wall itself to make sure I liked it.

After this, it was time to put it on the wall. So I projected it on to the wall and lightly put down some pencil lines. I didn’t want both sides to be exactly the same, so this was only to make sure it wouldn’t be completely lopsided.

Then it was time to remove the projection, turn up the music and get started. I used a non-toxic Uni-Posca paint marker to lay down the lines. Other than light pencil markings, this was a very spontaneous free hand painting. I felt it not being exact or completely symmetrical helped it be organic and alive.

Sean Martorana Paints the Weather for an Interactive App

From Philly Side Arts:

Weatherwise is an app for iphone and android that gives users a unique way to interact and view the current and forecasted weather. Local Wisdom, the app’s creator, wanted to build their themes by focusing on local artist talent to display the weather in an experience unlike any other before. They asked Sean Martorana to be one of the first to help develop the process and create a custom theme for Weatherwise.

Sean’s approach was a little bit different than the other very technically designed themes. “I wanted to go in a different direction than the the existing (and very well done) computer-generated themes.” Weatherwise’s original themes include a 8bit RPG inspired theme, a robot in a garden, and personas that change according to the weather. “I took a more hand-painted approach with my theme. I literally painted each element separately, cut out the elements, and reassembled them in different ways based on the different atmospheres.”

Even when the weather is not that nice outside, it still can look good on your phone. You can download the theme for free here: http://weatherwiseapp.com/ and then cruise and install the themes through the app itself.
